2018 is off to a rocky start: Less than a month into the new year—and before the typical flu season peak—federal health officials have already proclaimed this year the worst flu season in almost a decade.

As of this writing, almost 40 children have died, and supplies used to combat the flu—IV fluids and Tamiflu, for example—are dwindling. Some providers have even run out of flu shots. The flu shot is a polarizing topic—some consider it practically mandatory, while others fear the toxins in the vaccine—but no matter which side of the coin you fall on, it’s not a surefire indicator of protection from the dreaded virus. Nothing is. However, there are precautions other than the shot you can take. Natural supplements are often overlooked as a way to fight common ailments. In the same way that building the nutritional content of a farm’s soil produces sturdier and more resistant crops than depleted soils can produce, supplementing with nutrients that boost the immune system can help your body protect itself from the attacks on your immune system. Many individuals today have such weak immune systems because of poor choices in lifestyle and lack of nutritional supplements. A flu germ entering a weak immune system is delighted that the body is so unable to fight it off.

Here’s what I recommend as a daily regimen for optimal immune support:

Vitamin D (at a minimum of 5,000 international units), vitamin C (1,000 milligrams twice daily), a quality multivitamin, omega-3 fatty acids and green drinks (to reduce acidity) should be part of your daily regimen to build the overall vitality of the human body. Added benefits of supplementation include increasing the body’s ability to produce energy, maintaining optimal brain chemistry, reducing all sicknesses, lowering inflammation and longer life. Click To Tweet Specific immune stimulants such as echinacea, goldenseal, elderberry, olive leaf and many other natural remedies are often chosen during periods requiring quick immune response to hasten recovery.  Keep in mind, however, that these immune stimulants should actually be avoided except when needed because their effectiveness is significantly reduced with extended consumption.  Somewhere along the way, our society has lost the ability to just trust the wisdom of our own bodies. It happened somewhere on the path to profits, when marketing convinced us to bow down to the “treatments” that will help us survive. I have seen thousands of individuals who became healthier not through synthetic medications but by changing their lifestyles, embracing supplements and exercising. If you give the body the tools it needs to stay healthy and get out of its way, it will do the healing.
