It seems like Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) has been found to do a little bit of everything. Today, I’m going to share with you my favorite things ACV does for your health. And I’m betting there are some you’ve never heard before.
Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar
Beginning with one of the most popular…
ACV has the ability to reduce blood insulin levels in humans. Research has shown that 2 tablespoons of ACV with a carbohydrate rich meal helps reduce the insulin and blood sugar response by as much as 30%! That is HUGE.
Why Is Insulin Important?
I love this question. It allows me to educate our customers about the importance of early warning systems. You watch the weather to know a tornado is coming before it rips your house down. That’s what keeping track of your insulin can do for you. Knowing your insulin before your blood sugar gets to diabetic levels is highly valuable.
Insulin is the proverbial “canary in the coal mine.” It alerts us to most chronic disease states. Name the disease, and you can be sure insulin spikes and drives it. That’s why a cheap, easy supplement like ACV should be a staple in everyone’s cabinet. Simply taking 2 tablespoons of ACV with a glass of water before at least 2 meals a day, is all you need to see the blood sugar benefits.
Acetic Acid is the active ingredient in ACV. Taking 2 tablespoons a day will give you roughly 1,600 – 3,300 milligrams of Acetic Acid.
Next up for ACV benefits: its ability to detoxify glyphosate.
Most folks have heard about glyphosate. If you haven’t, it’s a nasty antibiotic that is marketed as the weed killer Round-Up.
Since the early 90s, the US Agricultural Industry has been lobbied and inundated with Round-Up usage. Supposedly safe, now over 90 percent of the main US crops (wheat, corn, and soy) are sprayed with Round-Up and/or are sold as GMO seeds that already contain the chemical. With the Freedom of Information Act passage from a few years ago, new light was shed on what the natural industry has known for years. Glyphosate is potentially highly toxic to humans and animals.
Now owned by Bayer, the chemical is the subject of thousands upon thousands of lawsuits regarding its effect on humans and the environment. It just so happens that glyphosate is extremely hard to detox out of the body as well. This creates several issues for our health.
Luckily, ACV with “mother” has a key bacteria called Acetobacter. This bacteria, also found in other fermented foods such as sauerkraut and kombucha, is highly concentrated in the mother of ACV. It can help detoxify not only glyphosate but also many other common toxins.
We recommend getting a test performed to see your current level of toxicity from Glyphosate and then begin a regimen of ACV for at least 3 months.
After 3-6 months of supplementation, opt for a follow up test to see if your levels have improved! Understand however, that unless you switch to a fully organic and grass fed/finished and wild caught diet, you will likely not see much improvement. The animals and plants we eat are so saturated with this chemical that this is the only way to ensure the least amount of exposure.
Another awesome benefit to ACV supplementation is heartburn reduction. The majority of us know all too well how aggravating and unpleasant the occasional or not-so-occasional heartburn can be. Here’s what you may not know. Most heartburn is due to too little acid production rather than too much!
Here is where ACV helps. The acid content of the drink, just a few tablespoons with a small amount of water can help to balance the acid level of the stomach. That’s with or without a dash of baking soda. Long-term usage is best to help correct the issue, but ACV works quickly in a pinch.
How about weight loss? Yes, though minor, ACV has been studied many times in conjunction with weight loss. Though its overall weight loss prowess is less than impactful (roughly 2-4 lbs over the course of 3 months depending on dosages of 1-2 tbsp per day), it does show to be fairly effective at reducing appetite after carb laden meals.
Now, obviously you would in all likelihood not be eating high carbohydrate meals while trying to lose weight.
However, for those folks just getting started and trying to cut cravings and slowly work themselves into carbohydrates depletion or reduction, this may be a fantastic way to help give yourself a potent boost! Not to mention the fact that I mentioned earlier about ACV helping to reduce blood sugar and insulin levels. This alone will go a long way in reducing body fat if done regularly after meals.
How to Down ACV
The biggest pushback I get about adding ACV to a daily regimen is the taste. And I get it. That’s why I take my ACV with a squeeze of lime or lemon for flavor. Other clients have complained that vinegar bothers their stomach. If you experience a stomach ache, simply add 1/3rd of a tsp of aluminum free baking soda to the mix. It’s a super easy fix. For the best health benefits, have your ACV with some carbs.
Which ACV should I take?
This is a great question. Some things to consider when purchasing a ACV liquid are as follows:
- Must be Organic
- Should not be Pasteurized
- Needs to contain “Mother”
- Contains a high amount of Acetic Acid
Based on Consumer Labs verified reporting, potentially the best fit to all of these parameters is the ACV produced by Bragg. Containing an average of 744mg of Acetic Acid per serving while maintaining slightly less than 5% acidity puts it in a prime position to be both palatable and effective, as well as affordable. With an average cost of less than $6 per 16 oz bottle, this is a remedy well within the budget of the majority of folks. You can browse our whole selection of ACV here.
