New studies confirm the positive effects of beets on reducing blood pressure, improving blood flow to the brain in older adults, and enhancing athletic performance!

beetsFOM_646x430Three studies, conducted separately and reported in PubMed, showed impressive improvement by eating or drinking beets! Beets are a natural food rich in nitric oxide. Increasing the level of Nitric Oxide in our blood serves to relax our arteries and improves blood flow.

  1. A double-blind study was performed on 12 trained cyclists (average 31 years of age). The first group ingested beet juice for 6 days. The second group was given a placebo. The results showed improved time-trial performance and power output for the group that drank the beet juice! The study can be viewed by clicking here.
  2. In two studies involving men, beetroot was found to reduce blood pressure.  The study demonstrated potential blood pressure lowering effects of low dose beetroot, and suggests cardio-protective blood pressure lowering effects of these types of foods. The study can be viewed by clicking here.
  3. The last study involved older adults (75 years of age) and showed that a diet high in nitrates from beets increased regional cerebral blood flow in the frontal lobe white matter. The study can be viewed by clicking here.

I never cease to be amazed how nature gives us the pharmacy we need to create optimal health.  As we continue to explore with research, the power of nutrients and foods becomes clear. We have choices for improving the health of our bodies without risking side effects.  I must admit, however, that despite enjoying most healthy foods, beets are not on my list. The great news is that many companies are now marketing liquid organic beet juice for those who cannot eat beets regularly, and it is concentrated enough to contain three beets per serving. I drink my beets directly before going into the gym and can feel the effects on perception and physical stamina within minutes!
