An app that simplifies healthy grocery shopping.
Yucca: healthy grocery shopping assistant
When we go grocery shopping we’re confronted with thousands of choices, most of which are convenient options meant to save you time. But this convenience comes with a sacrifice, your health! Not all boxed goods are bad, but sometimes it’s really difficult to decipher what exactly nutrition labels mean. How can you tell what’s balanced and what’s terrible?
This week Ed sits down to chat about a new app that he’s really excited about. It actually ranks food based on nutritional output and will even suggest healthier items that are similar! Don’t let grocery shopping get you down. Learn about this easy way to make wise choices when there are so many that are harmful.

Today, we’re diving into how to shop wisely in the grocery store to make choices that empower your health. Walking into a huge grocery store with tens of thousands of items can be overwhelming. They all look pretty good, and you might think they’re safe since they’re on the shelves, right? Well, that’s a huge misconception. So, how do we navigate this maze? Let’s break it down.
1. Master the Art of Label Reading
To make healthy grocery shopping choices, you need to become skilled at reading labels. Look beyond the marketing and understand what’s really in your food. Focus on the ingredients list and nutrition facts, paying close attention to:
- Added Sugars: Less is always better.
- Grains: Limit intake of wheat, bread, and pasta.
- Preservatives and Additives: Aim for fewer chemicals and artificial ingredients.
2. Use the Yucca App for Smart Shopping
I recently discovered an app called Yucca, which has made my grocery shopping much simpler. Here’s how it works:
- Scan Barcodes: As you shop, use the app to scan the barcode of any product.
- Get a Health Score: The app gives each product a score between 0 and 100.
- Healthier Alternatives: If a product scores low, Yucca suggests healthier options right there in the aisle.
For example, I scanned a popular drink, Xevia, which is sweetened with Stevia. It scored 74 out of 100—a pretty good choice. In contrast, a box of Pop-Tarts scored 1 out of 100 due to high sugars, unhealthy additives, and lack of nutritional value.
3. Understand Fats
One area where I slightly disagree with the Yucca app is its treatment of saturated fats. Not all saturated fats are bad. Here are some healthy options you can incorporate into your diet daily:
- Coconut Oil
- Butter
- Avocado Oil
- Fish Oil
- Eggs
These fats can be beneficial when balanced with other nutrients.
4. Reduce Sugar and Grains
Cutting down on sugar and grains is crucial for controlling weight, health, and insulin levels. Even though grains are often recommended, they aren’t necessarily the healthiest option. Focus on reducing your intake of:
- Bread
- Pasta
- Wheat-based products
