The FDA is proposing new guidelines for nutritional supplements, that would go into effect later this year. These new proposals would do away with most of our current supplements, and put them under complete FDA regulation.
These new proposals for strict guidelines on supplements comes, despite the known safety of nutritional supplements. In 2008, there were an estimated 56 billion dosages of nutritional supplements taken without a single death. In 2009, according to the American Association of Poison Control annual report, there were only 41 major adverse reactions to nutritional supplements and one death. In contrast, there were 7,000 major adverse reactions from pharmaceutical drugs and 496 deaths.
